Red Sandalwood, one of the most popular natural dyes, is commonly used in witchcraft and magick for lust, love, purification, consecration, and protection of sacred space. Despite its’ name, it is botanically separate from other Sandalwood. This small tree, which can take nearly 80 years to reach its mature height of 45 feet, has been used for over four thousand years.
In many cultures, Red Sandalwood is used to mark the body during religious and ritual devotions. Along with benzoin and rose, it is the perfume associated with Netzach in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Some like to use it as an incense for trancework or meditation. This wood is devoted to both Venus and Jupiter (although some will even designate it Mars due to its red colour even though it has no heat).

To use, take a small bowl capable of withstanding heat or a cauldron and fill it with sand. Place a lit charcoal disc at the centre and light it, ensuring it begins to burn. Once the charcoal is lit, sprinkle a small amount of incense on top. Remember to never leave the burning charcoal unattended.
